A Beautiful DIY Wedding at Deddington Church | Oxfordshire Wedding Photographer

There is something incredibly special about a wedding that feels completely personal to the couple. Alex and Robin’s wedding in Oxfordshire was exactly that — relaxed, emotional and full of thoughtful DIY details, family involvement and plenty of personality.

From getting ready at The Bear Hotel in Woodstock to travelling to the ceremony in a family camper van, followed by a DIY garden reception filled with BBQ food, drinks and live music, every part of the day reflected who they are.

As an Oxfordshire wedding photographer, these are the weddings I love photographing most — celebrations where the focus is on people, genuine moments and the little details that make the day uniquely yours.

Getting Ready at The Bear Hotel, Woodstock

Alex chose The Bear Hotel in Woodstock as the starting point for her wedding morning.

Surrounded by her parents and her best friend, the preparations were relaxed and personal. Her best friend took care of her hair and makeup, while her parents were there to help Alex prepare for the day ahead.

There were plenty of happy moments, but the morning was emotional too. Seeing a bride with her parents on the morning of her wedding is always incredibly special, and these quieter moments often become some of the most meaningful photographs of the entire day.

For me, documentary wedding photography in Oxfordshire is about allowing these moments to happen naturally rather than constantly directing what happens in front of the camera.

A Bride with Meaningful Family Details

Alex looked incredible in her white wedding dress, but some of the most special details were the ones that carried family history.

She wore pearls belonging to her grandmother and borrowed jewellery from her mum.

These details may seem small, but they can mean so much on a wedding day. They become part of the story — connecting the bride with the people and generations who have shaped her life.

Capturing these details is an important part of my approach to wedding photography. Alongside the big moments, I look for the little things that you might not notice until you look back through your photographs years later.

Arriving at Deddington Church by Camper Van

The wedding ceremony was due to begin at 2:30pm at Deddington Church, Oxfordshire.

Alex travelled to the ceremony with her parents in a camper van — which was a brilliant personal touch.

The family own their own camper vans and hire them out for weddings and celebrations, so using one as their wedding transport was a natural choice and fitted perfectly with the relaxed feel of the day.

As an Oxfordshire wedding photographer, I love photographing details like this because they tell you something about the couple.

Not every wedding needs a traditional wedding car. Sometimes the best wedding transport is something that already has a story behind it.

A Traditional Church Ceremony in Oxfordshire

Once Alex arrived at Deddington Church, the excitement of the day really began to build.

After the emotional morning with her parents, it was time for Alex and Robin to finally say their vows.

Church weddings provide so many opportunities for natural documentary photographs — the anticipation before the bride arrives, the reactions of family and friends, the first glimpse of the bride and all those fleeting moments between the formal parts of the ceremony.

Rather than staging these moments, my approach is to observe and capture them as they naturally happen.

A DIY Garden Wedding Reception

Following the ceremony, the celebrations continued with a DIY reception in the back garden of the house.

This was one of my favourite parts of Alex and Robin’s wedding.

Instead of a traditional wedding reception venue, they created their own celebration with the help of family and friends. There were DIY elements throughout the garden, bringing everything together into a relaxed and welcoming space for both the day guests and evening guests.

There was a live band, BBQ food, a drinks bar and plenty of time for everyone to relax and enjoy the celebrations.

It felt less like a formal wedding reception and more like a huge garden party surrounded by the people they loved.

The Details That Made the Day Unique

One of the things that stood out throughout the day was how much thought had gone into creating everything themselves.

From the camper van to the DIY garden reception, the wedding was filled with personal touches.

These are exactly the kinds of details I look for when photographing a wedding.

As a documentary-style Oxfordshire wedding photographer, I’m not interested in creating a collection of photographs that could belong to anyone. I want your photographs to remind you of your day — the people, the atmosphere, the details and the moments that made it yours.

Live Music, BBQ & a Garden Full of Guests

As the afternoon turned into evening, the garden became the perfect setting for the celebrations.

The live band brought energy to the reception, while BBQ food and drinks kept everyone together. Guests could relax, talk, eat, drink and enjoy the music.

There was a wonderful informality to the evening.

And that’s something I particularly love about photographing relaxed weddings in Oxfordshire. When couples create an atmosphere where their guests can simply enjoy themselves, some of the most genuine photographs naturally happen.

The laughter, hugs, dancing, conversations and spontaneous moments become the story of the evening.

Alex and Robin’s wedding is a perfect example of why you don’t need to follow a traditional wedding formula.

Your wedding can be a church ceremony followed by a garden party. You can arrive in a camper van. You can make your own decorations, serve BBQ food and have your friends and family involved in bringing everything together.

There are no rules that say your wedding has to look a certain way.
